Too cold or hot in your house? An increasing popular alternative to a traditional heating and cooling system, is a Ductless or Mini-Split System. These systems are excellent where ductwork isn’t an option, to supplement your existing HVAC system, or in addressing hot or cold problem areas.
Ductless systems are more flexible than traditional heating & cooling systems, because ductless systems don’t use ductwork and are smaller in size. The only requirements are a small outdoor unit and one or more indoor units, along with access to electricity and a place to mount the units.
The indoor heads from an interior design standpoint can be suspended from a ceiling, mounted flush into a drop-ceiling, or can be mounted on a wall. Ductless systems can be installed in a variety of applications including new construction, during a remodel, or anytime for a homeowner who just wants to supplement or heat/cool a specific area. Each head or “zone” comes equipped with its own thermostat, allowing you to control the temperature of each space individually.
Depending on the brand and make, ductless systems run efficient, ranging up to 30.5 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) for cooling and 12.5 HSPF (Heating Season Performance Factor) for heating, with operation levels to -22° F to 130° F. Select models are ENERGY STAR® rated as well, which means they are more efficient than the minimum standards set forth by the U.S. Federal Government. In addition to operational efficiency, added energy savings can also be seen with the ability to individually control the temperature of each space. You can simply turn the temperature down or turn off the unit when the room isn’t occupied.
Did you know the quality of indoor air is typically lower than that of outdoor air? Over time, ductwork accumulates dust, pollen, bacteria, allergens, and other particulates. When you go with a ductless system, you can improve your air quality by removing the need for these air ducts. Many ductless systems offer multi-stage filtration that greatly reduces air contamination and creates a healthier indoor environment.
Most ductless systems can be installed in a single day, depending location and number of units required. The linesets and electrical required for the systems only need a three-inch hole that makes them easier to integrate into a building.
