Years of Experience
Maintaining a water heater is important to ensure that it runs efficiently and lasts for as long as possible. Here are some tips on how to maintain your water heater.
If you have a water heater made after 2003, or an electric heat pump, the big concern is dust. It’s not something we realize when thinking about regular maintenance, but if you aren’t dusting your water heater air screens, it can lead to many hot water problems.
Over anodes, if you have hard water, you may need a flush kit added as well. Softeners can remove mineral sediment, but you’ll still want to have regular maintenance to monitor the water heater and prevent replacement costs due to a lack of scheduled and ongoing maintenance.
Check your water heater regularly for leaks. If you notice any leaks or signs of corrosion, contact one of the professionals at Lindemann to inspect and repair the issue.
Another consideration is checking the water heater’s T&P (temperature and pressure) relief valve yearly. Residential valves are prone to failure, but it’s an inexpensive part to replace regularly.
We're Here To Help
With all of the many components, pieces, and inter-workings of your water heater, never hesitate to talk to the professionals. Lindemann Heating & Cooling is here to help! You may need a technician to take a look at what needs to be replaced to make sure that your water heater will be working properly. We can assist with regular maintenance and keep your heat-pump working at optimal efficiency.
Over small issues with screens, you can save considerable money retrofitting your water heater. This can prevent the cost of installing a new tank, and the plumbing costs associated with that install. A retrofit includes checking and changing anodes, controlling sediment build up and updating fittings to prevent a possible costly plumbing service call.
Signs of Disrepair
If you are having issues with your water heater today, also think about past performance and issues. Do you have a service log near your unit that shows you when the unit has been looked at? Water heaters, in general, last about 12 years. Depending on how long you’ve had your unit, the age may be a large factor in gauging increasing scheduled repairs or just replacing the water heater.
Age isn’t the only factor. If you’ve been maintaining your system for some time, you can greatly extend the life of your unit. By flushing your system annually and having Lindemann out for regular maintenance on all your existing heating & cooling units, you can greatly increase the longevity of your system.
There may be other signs your water heater needs replacing. Sometimes heaters die long before they should. For instance, an improper installation can result in a water heater only lasting for a few years.
If you notice any of the following signs, you may need a water heater replacement rather than a repair:
If you have any reason to suspect that you need a new water heater, check with our certified HVAC technicians at Lindemann before you contact a plumber. Trust Lindemann to guide you on the best option, whether that’s to repair or replace your existing water heater.
